THE INNER CAST

The Elevate Edit / Backstage Notes / Act 3

Can I respond to my inner critic without pretending everything is fine?

Specific feedback beats a character verdict.

“I am terrible at this” sounds decisive. It tells you little about what to do next. For this exercise, treat the Critic as a character who has submitted a very unhelpful review.

Critic: “One star. Would panic again.”

Director: “Please submit one specific revision.”

Try replacing a verdict with a description: “I lost my place in the presentation.” Then add a workable revision: “I can use three cue cards and rehearse the opening.” The aim is not to praise yourself on command. It is to make the information useful.

Your revision desk

Write one sentence you catch yourself saying. Underline the part you can actually observe. Ask: “What skill, preparation, boundary or support would help?” You decide whether a different sentence fits. No quiz result defines your identity.
